Engineering Smarter Logistics: A SaaS Inventory Module for Oil Rig Construction

The Challenge

Oil rig construction is one of the most complex and high-stakes engineering endeavours on the planet. Every project involves thousands of components, dozens of suppliers, intricate logistics chains, and razor-thin margins for error. For decades, much of this complexity has been managed through sprawling spreadsheets — a method that is not only inefficient but dangerously prone to human error in an industry where mistakes can cost millions.

Animus Technology recognised this pain point and built Gekko, a cloud-based SaaS platform designed to bring modern project management intelligence to the oil rig construction sector. Gekko had already established itself as a trusted tool for project oversight, but a critical gap remained — inventory and logistics management. Clients were still toggling between Gekko and external Excel spreadsheets to track materials, parts, and supplies.

The challenge for Wozify was clear. We needed to design and develop an inventory management module that could be seamlessly integrated into Gekko’s existing architecture, flexible enough to accommodate the diverse and often highly customised workflows of oil rig construction companies, and robust enough to eliminate spreadsheet dependency entirely — all without disrupting the platform’s existing functionality or its active user base.

The Solution

Wozify deployed a carefully assembled team comprising a medior UI designer, a senior UX/UI designer, a medior front-end developer, and a dedicated project manager. This blend of design and development expertise ensured that the new module would not only function flawlessly but also deliver an intuitive, frictionless experience for users accustomed to the flexibility of spreadsheets.

The UX design process began with a deep dive into the workflows of Gekko’s clients. We studied how different companies managed their inventory, identified the pain points of spreadsheet-based tracking, and mapped out the most common data management patterns across the industry. This research informed the design of a module that was both structured enough to enforce data integrity and flexible enough to accommodate varied workflows.

On the development side, our frontend specialist built the module in React, ensuring tight integration with Gekko’s existing backend infrastructure. The module was designed to handle complex data relationships — linking inventory items to specific projects, tracking component status through multiple stages of procurement and deployment, and providing real-time visibility into stock levels and logistics timelines.

The Result

While the project remains ongoing and quantifiable metrics are still being gathered as the module rolls out to Gekko’s client base, the anticipated impact is substantial. By automating and centralising inventory management within a single, cloud-based platform, Gekko’s clients can expect significantly reduced operational overheads, improved accuracy in logistics planning, and a dramatically streamlined process for managing complex supply chains.

The elimination of spreadsheet dependency alone represents a paradigm shift for an industry that has relied on manual data management for far too long. With real-time visibility into inventory status, procurement timelines, and project logistics, decision-makers will be equipped to act faster, smarter, and with greater confidence.

For Animus Technology, the module strengthens Gekko’s position as the most comprehensive SaaS platform in its niche, expanding the platform’s value proposition and deepening client stickiness. For Wozify, this project exemplifies our ability to embed within a client’s product team, understand complex industry-specific challenges, and deliver solutions that drive measurable business value.
